Man in ‘critical condition’ after attack in Bristol high street - police make arrest

A man has been arrested by police after an attack on a high street in Bristol, which has left the victim in a critical condition in hospital.

Avon and Somerset Police say a man, in his 30s, was punched to the floor in Hanham High Street, close to The Jolly Sailor pub, on Friday night at around 8.30pm. The man was taken to Southmead Hospital with a serious head injury.

Police closed the road for several hours while forensic investigators carried out work at the scene. The following morning, blood-stained paper could still be seen on the pavement.

Today (July 9), police said a 33-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident. The force also said the injured man was in hospital in a critical condition.

A police spokesperson added: “The arrested man was interviewed by detectives yesterday evening before being released from custody on bail. Enquiries into the incident, including a review of CCTV, are ongoing.

“Anyone who witnessed what happened, or who has information which could help out investigation, is asked to phone 101 and provide the call handler with the reference 5223162515.”
