People living in almost 200 streets across Bristol did not have their recycling picked up yesterday (October 11). Bristol Waste has blamed staff shortages and sickness levels, while thanking people for their patience.

Along with the 185 streets not to getting their recycling collected, people living on 15 streets also didn’t have their black bins collected. Those impacted by the missed collections were told to put out their bins again today.

The streets with the missed collections were in many areas including St Anne’s, St Philips, Brislington, Stockwood, Lawrence Hill, Hengrove and Totterdown.

BristolWorld approached Bristol Waste, which is owned by Bristol City Council, on the matter. A spokesperson said the body had been impacted by staffing shortages - this week UK unemployment fell to its lowest level since 1974.

Bristol Waste currently has a range of vacancies on its website, from LGV drivers to cleaning supervisors to mechanic fitters. In a statement, it said: “Like others in the waste industry, we’re currently experiencing staff shortages.

“Unfortunately this has been compounded by higher than average sickness levels and means we haven’t been able to get to every home on their scheduled collection date. We are keeping Bristol City Council up to date on the situation, and our crews are working really hard to catch back up.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience as we do so. If your road has not been collected, please leave your bins and boxes out and we will return as soon as possible.”

Any road which has not had a scheduled recycling or black bin collection will be listed here: www.bristolwastecompany.co.uk/collections. And people can report a missed collection online by 5pm on the day after their scheduled collection at www.bristol.gov.uk/missedcollection.
