Pictures have been shared across social media of the blaze

A closed-down sports centre in south Bristol is at the centre of a major fire this morning - with police closing nearby roads as firefighters attend to it.

The fire broke out at the former Whitchurch Sports Centre in Bamfield just before 10am. Six crews from Avon Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene attempting to extinguish the blaze. See the service’s full statement in the updates below.

On social media, people have been sharing pictures and footage of the smoke, which can be seen across the city.

One person said: “There is a major fire at the site of the old sports centre on Bamfield. Police have closed the road and residents nearby are being advised, as a precaution, to keep windows closed. It is not currently clear if it is the sports centre building on fire or the cars in the car park.”
