Awaab’s Law: Bristol-built technology helped shape landmark housing safety law - here's how

A Bristol-built video animation tool has played a key part in shaping ‘landmark’ housing safety law.

VideoScribe played a key role in shaping Awaab’s Law, which comes into effect today (Monday, October 27).

The new law requires social landlords to fix damp and mould hazards within strict time limits, which was introduced following the tragic death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak from prolonged exposure to mould in his family’s home in Rochdale.

During the government’s consultation process for the law, barrister Christian Weaver, who represented Awaab’s family, used VideoScribe to create an animated explainer video that made the proposed legislation clear and accessible to everyone, including those who do not speak English as a first language.

Consultations of this kind typically attract around 100 responses. Thanks to the clarity and reach of the video, Awaab’s Law received over 1,000 public responses, more than ten times the usual number.

“We wanted to make sure that everyone affected by this issue could understand what was being proposed and have their say,” said Christian Weaver. “VideoScribe allowed me, with no design or video background, to create something that people could easily engage with and share.”

VideoScribe, developed in Bristol by Sparkol Ltd, is an easy-to-use animation tool that enables anyone, not just designers or video professionals, to turn complex information into clear, engaging videos. The software is used by thousands of businesses, public sector communicators, and campaigners around the world.

“This is a powerful example of how simple, accessible communication tools can make a real difference,” said Zoe Taylor, VideoScribe CEO. “Christian’s video helped people understand their rights and ultimately supported a law that will save lives. We’re proud that VideoScribe could play a small part in that.”

Christian is creating a follow-up video using VideoScribe to help ensure people are aware of their rights under the new law and know what to do if landlords fail to act.

Anyone can use VideoScribe to make their own clear, engaging videos, or Sparkol’s Studio team can create one for people.
