A school in Bristol has banned students from bringing in bottles of Prime drink after becoming aware of the sale of the sought-after products on site. Redland Green School is also concerned over the impact of the drinks on children during school time.
The range of Prime drinks was launched by YouTube starts KSI and Logan Paul in January last year - and has since become a sensation, partly thanks to the pair actively promoting the products to their 140million followers online. Bottles have been reported to have been sold for £100 - despite them having an RRP of £1.99.
The interest has also seen long queues at supermarkets. Last month, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s became the latest companies to start stocking the range - which include different flavours of Prime Hydration and Prime Energy.
However, there have been concerns raised, from the cost of the drinks to their impact on young people. It has led Ben Houghton, the headteacher of Redland Green School, to take action, and ban the drink from school grounds.
In a newsletter to parents, he said: “Recently we've had a few cases of students bringing bottles of ‘Prime Hydration’ to school. We have also been made aware that some students are selling these drinks to other students.
“Although there are no health risks to children associated with drinking ‘Prime Hydration’ the drink does contain a high level of electrolytes. Electrolytes aren't recommended for children unless they are unwell or at risk of dehydration.
“Another form of the drink, ‘Prime Energy’, contains around 200mg of caffeine for every 330ml and as a result is not recommended for children under the age of 18. As a result, the school has taken the decision to ban all forms of the Prime drink and other energy drinks. Students should therefore not bring these to school as they will be confiscated and disposed of.”
Prime Hydration is advertised as a ‘hydration drink’ that contains mostly water added with vitamins and minerals and has few calories with no added sugar and is made up of coconut water with no caffeine.
