The Ostrich in Bristol has been named one of the best boozers in the south west after scooping a ‘county winner’ accolade in the National Pub & Bar Awards 2022.

The harbourside watering hole, which dates all the way back to 1745, will now go head-to-head with 93 shortlisted pubs across the UK for the title of 2022 National Pub & Bar of the Year.

Owned by the Butcombe Brewing Company, The Ostrich was once a humble dockside inn where sailors, merchants and dock-workers stopped off for a drink.

Now it sports a heated teepee and massive riverside beer garden, along with a ‘Top Deck’ dining space and bar upstairs, the Portside BBQ selling American-inspired street food and an extensive rum menu.

The Ostrich remains a popular choice with drinkers, particularly in the summer months thanks to its relaxing views over the water and Redcliffe.

Thrilled pub staff said: “Can you believe it?! We’d like to take this time to thank each and every one of our incredible members of staff.

“Hospitality really has taken all kinds of wild twists and turns over the past two years, and every single one of our staff members has worked tirelessly through every lockdown, every re-open, every change and trial to make this happen.

“And of course we can’t forget you guys, our lovely and loyal customers. You’ve stuck with us through thick and thin, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the ongoing support and custom. You make us who we are.”

The Ostrich is one of seven pubs across the south west to be shortlisted, including The Old King’s Head near Weston-super-Mare and others in Wiltshire, Cornwall and Devon.
