John Dorrington, M&S regional manager for Bristol and Bath, said: “The last day of trading at our M&S Bristol store in Broadmead is January 8 and the vast majority of colleagues will be joining our surrounding stores in the region.

“I would like to thank both our colleagues and customers for their service and support.”

The future of the building, much like the Debenhams building which has remained empty since May, remains unclear.

M&S was consulting with 89 staff when the closure was originally announced in October, although it added that this figure did not equate to redundancies.

The Broadmead store is one of 30 M&S shops set to close over the next decade as part of turnaround plans which will also see the loss of around 7,000 jobs.

It comes after the company announced a pre-tax loss of £201.2m for the 20/21 financial year, down from a £67.2m profit the year before.
