WATCH: Bristol M&S shoppers react to closure plans

‘It is a terrible idea’

Shoppers have spoken of their disappointment after M&S announced plans to close its Broadmead store in Bristol.

The shop could close in January, under plans by the high street chain.

On the same day shoppers came out of the store to share their reaction with BristolWorld.

Becky Smart, 42, from Brislington, said: “I’m a bit surprised, actually - if I’m honest.

“It is a bit sad, it is one of the shops I visit quite a bit. Just a sign of the times I suppose.”

Liz Cocks, 75, from Whitchurch, said: “I’m disappointed because I quite like to go in and see the things rather than buy online, and now its Cribbs Causeway you have to go to, which is quite a distance for some people.

“I think it will lead to the demise of the city centre, because so many are going, and once one big shop goes the rest follow.”

Lesley Phelan, 65, from Fishponds, said: “It is sad, very sad. Marks and Spencer has always been in Bristol and now there isn’t as much for my age in the city.”

The planned closure would not only impact shoppers.

Taxi driver Javed Shabber said he picked up most of his customers from a taxi rank outside the store.

He said: “I think it is a terrible idea, really.

“It is going to have a huge impact because people come in specifically to shop in M&S . So there is going to be less people coming in town, that is obvious.”
