Bristol Hippodrome's The Book of Mormon had me laughing at things I probably shouldn't have been
If anyone ever says religion is boring, The Book of Mormon proves that to be completely wrong.
Now showing at Bristol Hippodrome, the production is a fun, camp, and outrageous look at The Church of Jesus Christ.

It follows Elders Price (played by Daniel George-Wright during my visit) and Cunningham (Sam Glen) as they’re sent to Uganda to recruit new Mormons - and their journey is an absolutely hilarious one.
Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, alongside Robert Lopez, the show has the same unhinged sense of humour that their long-running animated series is known for.
But comedy aside, it is ultimately brilliant musically. Hasa Diga Eebowai, for example, will be in my head for days to come, especially given what the song means.
The set is also very realistic, and the portrayal of Uganda, though definitely stereotypical, transports you to the country.
George-Wright and Glen both nail the portrayals of their characters, but Glen really stands out for the outlandish comedy he brings to the role as he says anything he can to get the Ugandans to become baptised.
The character of Nabulungi (Nyah Nish), a young Ugandan girl, also stood out to me for her incredible vocals.

The Book of Mormon is crazily funny, and its humour is very naughty at times, but this is what gives it an edge and gets the whole audience laughing.
It’s not afraid to tow the line a bit, and that comedy, paired with incredible songs, really does make it one of the best musicals of the 21st century.
I’m trying not to give away any jokes, but it did make me wonder if I was laughing at things I probably shouldn’t have been.
Even though the show is 2 hours and 20 minutes long, it didn’t feel that way as it kept me thoroughly entertained throughout.
Anyone who goes to see this musical is bound to have a fantastic time - unless you’re very easily offended.
The Book of Mormon is showing at Bristol Hippodrome until Saturday, November 8. For tickets, visit: https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/the-book-of-mormon/bristol-hippodrome/
