Review: Hairspray at Bristol Hippodrome gives the audience what they want - but could be bolder

With big songs, dance routines and costumes, it presents an exciting story of Tracy Turnblad's journey to stardom.
However, I felt that the musical could be bolder - making it stand out from previous versions of the show.

The cast, including Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad, Strictly’s Joanne Clifton as Velma Von Tussle and Katie Brace as Tracy Turnblad, deliver performances that, while loyal to the original, lack a fresh or memorable touch.
The musical is high energy right from the beginning, but it certainly ramps up a notch when the Seaweed (Reece Richards) scenes start.
Michelle Ndegwa as Motormouth Maybelle also impresses with her strong vocals and rendition of "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful" to end the first half.

Despite the wow factor, it also effectively addresses the serious theme of fighting intolerance and racism in 1960s America.
With Hairspray, you know what you’re going to get, and while this new UK tour production may not feel particularly fresh or innovative, it likely satisfies the audience by giving them what they want.
Hairspray runs at the Bristol Hippodrome until Sunday, March 1. For tickets, click here.
