Review: I saw Dear Evan Hansen at Bristol Hippodrome and it was so much better than I expected
and on Freeview 262 or Freely 565
I only really knew that the main character is a socially awkward teenager, and wasn’t sure how that would work as a musical.
But it turned out to be so much better than I expected and I was gripped for the whole two-hour, 40-minute show.

It’s quite a simple plot, centred around Evan not telling the whole truth to fit in. But as the show progresses, his white lie spirals completely out of control, and I was committed to seeing how he gets caught out.
Played by Ryan Kopel, the actor’s vocals are amazing, with Waving Through A Window set to stay on my playlist for a long time to come.
There’s not an over-elaborate set or intricate costumes in this show, with it instead carried by the dynamics and emotion of its cast.
It's underlined by the serious theme of teenage suicide, and the way it’s told through the eyes of Evan and those around him is an emotional rollercoaster.

The representation of teenage life seems natural, which makes it relatable, and the on-stage graphics give the show a modern edge.
With an interesting plot, powerful songs and incredible cast performance, it’s no surprise that Dear Evan Haven is an Olivier, Tony and Grammy award winning musical.
