Bristol Hippodrome's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was even more colourful than I expected

I knew little about Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, apart from that it’s a bit out there.

But after seeing the musical for the first time at Bristol Hippodrome, I can confirm that it’s even more colourful than I expected - in the best way possible.

Yes, there’s Joseph (played brilliantly by Adam Filipe) and his iconic coat, but there’s also amazing lighting and performances throughout the entire 2-hour show.

Knowing Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber are behind the production, you know it’s going to be good and it certainly does not disappoint.

The musical has no spoken dialogue, which makes the plot a bit hard to follow, but with catchy songs like Any Dream Will Do, Poor, Poor Joseph and Go, Go, Go Joseph, there’s no problem with that.

Christina Bianco also does a fantastic job as the narrator and is just full of energy the whole time she’s on stage, which makes the show so much fun.

The wider ensemble cast are brilliant too, including the multiple child actors whose talent matches that of the adults.

Some of the musical numbers seem to go on for a good 10 minutes or so and rightly result in a huge applause from the audience for the cast’s incredible energy.

The biggest name in the production is Joe McElderry as the pharoah, who also gets a big applause when he first appears during the second half.

His voice is super soulful and his portrayal makes the pharaoh the standout of the show in my opinion.

I can see why, with its lack of dialogue, that Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a bit Mammite.

But if you let your mind go, you can only really enjoy the production because it’s bright, cheery and really is like no other musical.
