A section of a major road in Bristol will be closed for nearly two weeks as essential flood works are carried out. Here’s what you need to know.

The lower part of Whiteladies Road will be totally closed to motor vehicles from Monday (December 1) at 9.30am to Friday (December 12).

It follows after works were started in July to prevent localised flooding, make the pavements more accessible, and cycling safer.

The road has since been closed to motor vehicles travelling northbound from Whiteladies Road’s junction with Queens Road up to its junction with Tyndalls Park Road and St Pauls Road.

The same section of Whiteladies Road heading southbound will be closed from December 1 to 12 to carry out drainage investigatory works.

Whiteladies Road southbound will reopen on December 13, and the road northbound could open by December 19.

Work to complete drainage, pavement, cycle path and resurfacing works on this lower section of Whiteladies Road will continue in 2026.

During the works, access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained on the pavement (west side), but cyclists should dismount.

Bus Diversions

Buses will be diverted during next week’s works.

For all services – including the 1, 2, 2a, 3, 4, 71, T7, U1, U1N, and Y6 – travelling southbound, the diversion will be via Tyndall’s Park Road, Elmdale Road and Queens Avenue.

The northbound diversion will remain the same, via Queens Road and St Paul’s Road.

Road diversions for motor vehicles

The lower section of Whiteladies Road will be closed in both directions from 1 to 12 December.

If driving southbound, the diversion is via St Paul’s Road and Queens Road.

If driving northbound, the diversion is via Queens Road and St Paul’s Road.

Access to drive to and from properties along the closure will be maintained at all times but there may be times when it is restricted or temporarily delayed.

For properties north of building 15, including 15, access will be from the St Paul’s junction end of the closure.

For properties south of building 15, access will vary as the works progress.
