Oxford United boss response to links of becoming next Bristol City head coach

Oxford United manager Liam Manning says there has been no approach from Bristol City for his services.

Earlier this week it was reported that the Robins had been considered Manning for the head coach position. The Bristol Post said he was one of a number of names being discussed, however the involvement of compensation has made for a complicated process.

Manning fits the bill of what the club are looking for in their next boss after parting company with Nigel Pearson. He was in charge of MK Dons and led them to the play-offs and at Oxford, his team are currently second in League One.

When asked by BBC Radio Oxford about the speculation, he said: “Nothing to be honest, I’ve not heard anything, that’s the biggest bit. I don’t want to detract from today, today is about the team.

“I’ve heard no news and I’ve had nothing. For me as always I’ve never chased anything, it’s keeping my head down and doing a terrific job at the club here.”

Manning witnessed his team win 2-0 against Maidenhead United in an FA Cup first round tie. Former Bristol Rovers man Billy Bodin scored twice as the U’s progressed to the next stage.

City’s manager search is still ongoing, and the board has yet to make a decision. The club will be working towards a shortlist however, and Manning was quizzed as to whether he would consider the post.

When asked to confirm if there was any approach, he said: “Nothing I am aware of no.

Then prompted whether he’d be interested if an approach was made, he said: “No. I don’t see the point. It’s like transfer things. I don’t get involved in hypothetical situations.”

Curtis Fleming oversaw the 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Ashton Gate with Rob Dickie scoring the only goal of the game. The Robins have a week until their next game against QPR (November 11) where an appointment could be made.
