Carabao Cup: Bristol City and Bristol Rovers drawn away at Coventry City and Crawley Town

The 2022/23 Championship and League One fixtures came out earlier and now both the Gas and Robins know their Carabao Cup opponents

Bristol City and Bristol Rovers have both been given away matches in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Robins are to travel to Coventry City in all Championship clash, whilst the Gas face familiar opposition from last season, as they travel to Sussex to face Crawley Town.

Coventry claimed a league double over City last year, winning both at the Ricoh Arena and at Ashton Gate, whilst Rovers won 2-1 against the Reds back in March after defeating them 1-0 at the Memorial Stadium in September 2021.

Both matches are to be played on the week commencing August 8, with matches scheduled either for Tuesday, August 9 or Wednesday, August 10.

It will be a double game week for both Bristol clubs with Rovers away at Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink’s Burton Albion meanwhile City will welcome recently promoted Sunderland to Ashton Gate.

Seventy clubs entered the draw, 22 from the Championship and 24 each from League One and League Two with Burnley and Watford receiving byes to the next round.

The 13 Premier League teams not involved in European competition will enter in the second round which is due to take place on the week commencing August 22.

City’s best performance in the competition was reaching the semi-finals in both 1971, 1998 and in 2018.

Rovers last progressed from the first round stage back in 2019, defeating Cheltenham Town before losing to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Both teams suffered first round defeats last season with City losing on penalties to Forest Green Rovers whilst Joey Barton’s side fell to a defeat to Cheltenham.
