Ten incredible photos as Bristol Rovers earn unimaginable promotion from League Two
The Memorial Stadium witnessed a footballing miracle as Bristol Rovers earned promotion from League Two
Bristol Rovers scored seven league goals in a match for the first time since the 1960s as they won promotion to League One after a 7-0 thrashing of basement side Scunthorpe United.
The Gas were promoted in the most dramatic fashion, pipping Northampton Town by the virtue of goals scored, having overturned a five goal deficit.
After last week winning in stoppage time, coming back from 3-1 down to win 4-3, Joey Barton’s side went one further by doing what was needed to earn an immediate return back to English football’s third tier.
Teenage sensation Elliot Anderson scored the promotion clinching goal whilst there were braces from Antony Evans and Aaron Collins, whilst Connor Taylor scored after Oliver Lobley’s own goal began the scoring.
The game was even more dramatic when a pitch invasion following Anderson’s goal meant an extension of almost 30 minutes. It meant that Northampton’s game finished before Rovers, which meant they knew what they had to do.
Players had to retreat to the dressing room and the tunnel whilst a threat of abandonment came from the referee. It called for the likes of Barton and owner Wael al-Qadi having to address fans to act appropriately to help complete the task in hand.
It was truly a memorable day at a packed out Memorial Stadium with players and manager lifted on the shoulders of the adoring fans in awe of what their team had achieved.
To prolong celebrations, we bring you ten of the best images from the Mem. Let us know if in the comments you spot yourself!
