Tributes have been paid after the passing of former Bristol Rovers manager and Sheffield Wednesday defender Don Megson, who has sadly passed away at 86. Journalist Alan Biggs shared the news of his passing on Thursday, and that he 'peacefully' passed away.

He tweeted: “Very sad news. Been asked to post on behalf of the family that Don Megson has left us at the age of 86. A Sheffield Wednesday icon (1959-69). Captained #SWFC in ‘66 FA Cup final. Son Gary says Don passed peacefully.”

Don Megson was one of only three managers to lead the Gas into the second tier of English football, having a two-year spell as a player at Eastville Stadium, before taking the reins. He made 31 league appearances and scored one goal after ten years of service at Sheffield Wednesday, and then two years in, succeeded Bill Dodgin Sr.

During his five-year tenure as manager, he led the club to Watney Cup glory, as well as two Gloucestershire Cups, and also won promotion in 1974 after finishing second to Oldham Athletic in the old Division Three, now known as League One. Rovers stayed in Division Two, now known as the Championship until 1982, and their highest finish under Megson was 15th in the 1976/1977 season.

A statement from Bristol Rovers said: "Rovers are saddened to learn of the passing of former club manager Don Megson at the age of 86. Our thoughts are with Don's family and friends at this very difficult time."

Megson's playing career was mainly spent at Sheffield Wednesday, and he captained the Owls in the 1966 FA Cup final, losing 3-2 to Everton.
