Former Bristol Rovers and Cardiff City manager appointed at Championship club

Former Bristol Rovers manager Paul Trollope is back in the coaching game after being appointed as assistant manager at Luton Town. Rob Edwards was appointed as Hatters boss following the departure of Nathan Jones to Southampton and has given Trollope a role at Kenilworth Road.

He has linked up with the former Watford boss for their first day of training, ahead of the Championship's resumption, which is on Saturday, December 10. The 50-year-old has been out of full-time work since Chris Hughton's sacking at Nottingham Forest in September 2021.

He had been working in an advisory role to League Two club Newport County in recent months. Trollope was part of a panel that decided on giving Graham Coughlan the managers job at Rodney Parade.

Trollope's coaching career began at the Memorial Stadium having initially joined as a player in 2004. He took the reins in 2005 as caretaker manager, working alongside Lennie Lawrence. He guided them to a mid-table finish in his first season, and then led the Gas to an EFL Trophy final and promotion through the League Two play-offs.

Trollope guided the club to their first FA Cup quarter-final appearance in 50-years in 2008, but his time was brought to an end in December 2010 with the club inside the relegation zone in League One.

He has mainly worked under Chris Hughton, at Birmingham City and Norwich City, but also coached at Cardiff City, becoming their head coach for a short spell before he was sacked. Trollope was also part of the backroom staff of the Welsh national team, which reached the semi-finals of EURO 2016.

Since then, he reunited with Hughton at Brighton & Hove Albion, and later Nottingham Forest, and now finds himself working under Rob Edwards.
