Liverpool midfielder Mateusz Musialowski could be a target for Bristol Rovers after Joey Barton attended an Under-21's match with Paris Saint-Germain. Barton was in Merseyside on Wednesday night and caught the first-half of the Reds' 4-2 win against the French champions.

Barton was at Liverpool's Academy and witnessed Billy Koumetio score from inside his own half, before Luke Chambers scored a penalty and Koumetio added his second. Oludare Olufunwa added a fourth but Tony Mendy and Pascal Lemina scored late consolation goals for the visitors.

The 40-year-old did not deny his presence at the match on Wednesday, and admitted that he was in attendance to scout potential new players. Barton, who has used the loan market to full effect in his near two-year tenure, is in the market for new defenders, and a name had popped up.

A report from the Liverpool Echo said that Barton could have been watching over Jarell Quansah, as when the England Under-19 international was substituted for Lucas Pitt, he departed. Quansah is a centre-back and it is understood that Liverpool are willing to allow the Warrington-born defender to leave this month. Liverpool want him to gain experience in the Football League, and are now considering their options.

Whilst Quansah may be a target, Barton could have his eyes set on another player from an academy that has produced the likes of England internationals Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones. The Echo claimed that Barton spoke highly of Poland youth midfielder Musialowski.

Musiałowski is a winger and can play on both the left and right-side, but is predominantly left footed. The 19-year-old has played seven times this season in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy. At Under-18's level he scored 18 goals in 31 matches and provided four assists to his teammates.

The Echo also claimed the former Manchester City midfielder - well known amongst the footballing public - had a hilarious encounter with a steward that made his scouting mission slightly harder. Barton along with the numerous scouts in attendance sought a better position in the stand to gain a better vantage point, but was instructed by the club official to sit on the first row of seats.
