Bristol Rovers pair Aaron Collins and Joey Barton have given Lewis Gibson his backing after he joined Plymouth Argyle.

A return to the Memorial Stadium was hopeful at best, and now the 22-year-old’s future has been sorted out after signing with the Pilgrims. He was offered a new contract by Everton, but has opted to leave Goodison Park in pursuit of first-team football.

The Gas have played a big part in Gibson’s development, putting him in a good position for Championship football following a successful loan spell. He made 33 appearances across all competitions last season - the most in his career - and will now get a chance to prove his worth following a short stint with Reading in the second tier.

Gibson twice played against Plymouth last season as an opponent and helps provide defensive cover following James Wilson’s move to the Memorial Stadium. Plymouth will now have to pay compensation to both Everton and Newcastle United for the deal.

“Over the moon to get this one done!” said Gibson on an Instagram post as he linked up with Plymouth for their pre-season training camp.

“Can’t wait to see the Green army at Home Park. See you soon!”

After he posted on Instagram, Joey Barton who managed him at Rovers and at Fleetwood Town commented: “Good luck mate,” meanwhile Aaron Collins said “All the best bro.”

Josh Coburn, who was also on loan at Rovers from Middlesbrough last season and 10 goals in 35 games said: “All the best bro.”

Meanwhile, former Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Jamal Blackman is remaining in League One after signing with Burton Albion. The 29-year-old’s contract at Exeter City was not renewed, despite 10 clean sheets in 41 appearances for the Grecians.

Blackman was linked with a move to Rotherham United but the Millers have opted to sign Dillon Phillips following his release from Cardiff City. Blackman will now provide competition to Max Crocombe.
