Joey Barton is expecting big things from Trevor Clarke next season after the defender signed a new contract with Bristol Rovers.

The 24-year-old’s one-year contract was extended for a further two years with another year on the table after agreeing new terms with the Gas.

He joined from Rotherham United on a free transfer last July but didn’t have the benefit of a full pre-season and was injured in his first competitive match.

The injuries affected him and Clarke wasn’t a regular member of the first-team last season and was limited to just nine appearances all season, missing long periods.

As one of the first players to sign new terms after being offered a new deal, Barton believes more of an involvement in League One.

Speaking to the official club website after he committed his future to the Gas, the manager said: “Trevor had a tough year last year but showed enormous character to overcome those challenges and provided an impact towards the closing stages of the season.

“Now, with a full pre-season behind him, I think he’ll show his full potential."

Given the lack of centre-back options at the club at the moment following the return of Connor Taylor and James Connolly to their parent clubs. Clarke as it stands could have a more prominent role in the side.

First-choice left-back Nick Anderton can play as centre-back and could be moved there dependent on how Rovers do in the transfer market.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international faces a big year ahead of him next season after making just 30 appearances over the last three seasons for Rovers and the Millers.

Before that, he was a regular feature in the Shamrock Rovers defence, making over a century of appearances from a young age.

He featured in the game against Scunthorpe United and is hoping to use that to break into the team and hold down a first team spot.

"I am delighted to get this over the line,” he said to the official club website.

“It was tough at times last year with injuries. I just couldn’t seem to get going but I’m fully fit now and can’t wait to get the new season started so I can show supporters what I’m all about.

"Those last couple of weeks of the season are amongst my top football moments and securing promotion with this set of lads was brilliant. I’ve experienced League One before, and won promotion with Rotherham, so I’m looking forward to a good season.
