Bristol Rovers saw no fewer than 22 players depart the club in the summer of 2021/22 as relegation from League One required a reset for the Gas.
After finishing bottom of the third tier, changes were afoot with players either allowed to leave as their contract was run down or their deals were terminated, a year earlier than expected.
In the lower levels of professional football in England, a high turnover of players isn’t a rarity with clubs unable to afford offering players long lucrative contracts given the unpredictability of football.
The Gas are now in League Two and are battling for an immediate return back to where they were relegated from last season but almost find themselves in another tricky situation, though it is on a lesser scale.
A few of their first team players such as Antony Evans, Sam Nicholson and Paul Coutts find themselves out of contract at the end of the season, though there is less players to lose and the players may be inclined to stay given their positive experience so far.
Last week, goalkeeper James Belshaw put pen to paper on a new deal that would keep him at the Memorial Stadium until the summer of 2024 after cementing himself as the first choice goalkeeper this season.
It was a deal that showed that Rovers could keep hold of their best players, something they were unable to do last season with Joey Barton almost having to assemble a new squad.
So were there any players that fell through the cracks or would have been a big part of this team this season? We take a look at what happened to the Gas players who left this summer and what they are up to now.
