Bristol Rovers boasted a decent crowd when they hosted Forest Green Rovers at the Memorial Stadium in their opening fixture of the League One season.
A crowd of 9,064 fans watched on as FGR claimed a 2-1 win on their debut in English football’s third tier, with the home fans going home unhappy at the result of the match.
The attendance was impacted slightly by a reduced crowd size owing to restrictions placed on the club after two pitch invasions last season in the fixture between these two sides, as well as Rovers’ win over Scunthorpe United.
Nevertheless, there was a strong atmosphere and the match was played in a good spirit, with a hope of improvement on the weekend against Burton Albion.
Moving up to a higher division will see the Gas play against bigger clubs and there were some highly attended matches on the weekend, some of which beat attendances of Championship matches.
Derby County, beginning life in League One, had more than 30,000 at their game, whilst Sheffield Wednesday weren’t too far behind.
But what about League Two? Football League new boys Stockport County recorded a five-figure attendance after a long exile from professional football whilst Bradford City continued to be one of the well-backed teams in the fourth tier.
There were 24 teams in total from the two divisions that played a home match this weekend with a range of attendances, which makes English football so unique.
Below are the combined match attendances of both the League One and League Two clubs. What do you make of Rovers support?
