Bristol Rovers had plenty to shout about as they got back to winning ways with a win over Cambridge United.

After not winning since mid-August, goals from Luca Hoole and league debutant Josh Coburn helped the Gas to a 2-1 win at the Memorial Stadium.

It was much needed given Rovers had been in the relegation zone for a few weeks and their winless run almost stretched to double figures.

Joey Barton’s men however delivered a performance deserving of the victory and they made a small step toward winning back the fans.

A crowd of 9,007 attended on Saturday with 560 of those being from the opposition, making for the second-largest attendance of the season. Forest Green Rovers on the opening day remains the biggest crowd seen so far at 9,064 but it is a respectable attendance given the bad run of form.

Cambridge fans as well as exiled supporters of Rovers also had to contend with a national rail strike that severely affected their ability to attend games.

Out of the 12 matches in the third tier, Rovers recorded the seventh-highest attendance, which is respectable given the limited capacity.

As for the rest of the league, Derby County had the biggest attendance with 28,706 coming to watch the 2-1 defeat to Darrell Clarke’s Port Vale.

Sheffield Wednesday, another one of the big hitters in the division, had six thousand fewer fans but won 3-0 against Cheltenham Town in front of a crowd of 22,375.

Portsmouth and Plymouth Argyle are also competing for promotion and Pompey in a 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town had 18,271 whilst over 15,000 watched on as Plymouth easily beat Accrington Stanley.

At the bottom end of the table, Forest Green Rovers had the smallest crowd with 3,419 present at the New Lawn, made up mainly of Bolton Wanderers supporters. Attendances don’t win games however as the League One strugglers won 1-0 against the Trotters to move themselves up the table.
