Former Bristol Rovers and Coventry midfielder training with League Two club

Westbrooke has linked up with a League Two team in a bid to maintain his fitness

Zain Westbrooke is currently training with League Two outfit Walsall after his recent release from Bristol Rovers.

Rovers and Westbrooke decided to part ways last month, despite there being six-months left on his deal. He made three appearances this season, and was made available for transfer in August, but could not find a club. His release freed up space in Rovers' squad and they have four spaces, should they wish to sign any free agents.

It was reported by the Express & Star that the 26-year-old took part in a training session with the Saddlers earlier this week, as he looks to maintain his fitness after his contract with the Gas was terminated. Westbrooke was previously at Coventry City, and so training with Michael Flynn's side could make for a smooth transition in his search for a new club.

As Westbrooke was released inside the transfer window, he is free to join any club, providing that they have a space in their squad list. Clubs in League Two are allowed to name 22 senior players, and Walsall currently have two spots, should they consider signing Westbrooke.

The 26-year-old started Rovers' first League One game of the season against Forest Green Rovers but was then one of five players made available for transfer last summer. He went on to make two appearances in the EFL Trophy against Crystal Palace and Swindon Town but his last involvement was as an unused substitute against MK Dons in mid-December.

Westbrooke made 45 league appearances for the club in total across two-and-a-half-seasons, making 60 appearances in all competitions, scoring four times and earning nine assists. His best campaign saw him play 41 times with six assists and two goals, but Rovers suffered relegation in the same season.

Walsall have former Rovers loanee Timmy Abraham on their books, but he is currently out on loan at Oldham Athletic until the end of the campaign. Rollin Menayese is also contracted to the Midlands club, but he is at Walsall's League Two rivals Hartlepool United.
