Teams from the third and fourth tier of English football enter the competition at the first round stage, whilst teams in National League join at the fourth qualifying round. Some teams began their FA Cup story in the early stages of August after getting through the preliminary qualifying rounds.

Four-time winners Bolton Wanderers, who play their trade in League One are one of the biggest clubs to be involved in the draw and they could play a team from the non-league. Sheffield Wednesday, formerly of the Premier League and are three-time winners, these days play in League One and are record one of the biggest attendances.

Seventh-tier South Shields are one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition after they defeated Scunthorpe United 1-0 last Saturday. Former Rovers coach Chris Hargreaves who has a few ex-Gas players at Yeovil Town got taken to a reply by Taunton Town which means both sides will be involved in the draw. Welsh side Merthyr Town are are also in the first round draw for the first time in 17-years after defeating fellow seventh-tier side Folkestone Invicta 2-1 last Saturday.

Needham Market from Suffolk, who are also from the seventh tier, are involved in the draw after beating Maidstone United who are two divisions above them in the English pyramid system. There is a potential for an all League One clash, whilst also renewing old rivalries against League Two teams.
