Former Bristol Rovers midfielder Ed Upson has left Newport County to link up with a former manager at Stevenage.

After being released by Rovers in the summer following three years of service, he penned a one-year deal with the Welsh club.

He has since departed Rodney Parade though and will now spend the rest of the season in Hertfordshire, which will take him to the end of his contract with Newport.

Upson played 19 times for Newport this season but most of those appearances under Michael Flynn.

After the arrival of James Rowberry, the former Yeovil Town enforcer started just three matches and now the Welsh boss has allowed the player to leave.

Upson played over 100 times for Rovers after joining on a free transfer from Milton Keynes, featuring in three seasons of League One, before suffering relegation.

He is their third signing of the window after the addition of goalkeeper Christy Pym from Peterborough and defender Luke O’Neill from Kettering Town.

His three signings have already eclipsed the three he made during his time in charge as Rovers, as he brought in Joe Day and George Williams, who are no longer with the club.

His move to Stevenage does see him reunite with a manager he has previously played under though, which will have played a part in his decision.

Boro are managed by former Gas boss Paul Tisdale, who was manager at the Memorial Stadium from November 2020 to February 2021.

Tisdale was appointed manager in late November, replacing Alex Revell but they remain embroiled in a relegation battle.

They’re outside of the relegation zone by a point and are just two points clear of Oldham Athletic who are bottom of the table. Tisdale has yet to record a win since his appointment, losing five of his seven matches.

As Stevenage have already played at the Memorial Stadium this season, Upson won’t be making a return and instead could line up against Rovers on February 19.

He could be part of a midfield that boasts another former Gas midfielder in Chris Lines, who had two successful spells in the South West of England.

James Daly, who was at Rovers last season and played more than 30 times, scoring three goals is also at Stevenage, making for a proper Rovers reunion.
