Tranmere Rovers have released midfielder Jon Nolan after publishing their retained list for the 2022/23 season.

The League Two club - who recently appointed Ian Dawes as manager and Nigel Adkins as their director of football - have released 10 players with Nolan being one of them. Nolan made 12 appearances in total for the Birkenhead club, with half of those being substitute appearances.

He did not play a competitive game for the club from New Years Day onwards, and his last involvement was being an unused substitute in mid-February. His only goal contribution was an assist in the 5-3 defeat to Leeds United’s Under-23’s back in October.

It is the second summer in a row that Nolan will be on the lookout for a new club after being let go by Bristol Rovers last year. Nolan made just one appearance for the club - which was against Newport County - but he struggled with injury. He joined the Gas having not played competitive football for a year because of a long-standing knee issue. Nolan has been limited to 30 games over the last three seasons.

Nolan - born in Huyton - the same place as where Joey Barton grew up - came through Everton's youth academy before starting his senior career with Stockport County. He later joined Lincoln City before a brief loan spell with Wrexham, and then moved on to Grimsby Town. Paul Hurst signed Nolan three times, having brought him to Grimsby Town, and then Shrewsbury Town before his appointment at Ipswich Town.
