Bristol Rovers have been put on alert after January transfer target Callum Camps was released by League One club Fleetwood Town.

Camps had been a reported deadline day target for Joey Barton, but he ended up remaining at Highbury Stadium, where he saw out the remaining six months of his deal.

Back in January, Sun journalist Alan Nixon said Rovers and Shrewsbury Town were interested in the 26-year-old, whilst a reunion with Cheltenham Town’s Liam Sercombe was also spoken about.

Barton previously worked with Camps at Fleetwood, bringing him to the club in August 2020 before his sacking in January 2021.

Rovers ended up signing Elliot Anderson on loan from Newcastle United, whilst also signing Jon Nolan on a free transfer. Anderson has gone on to be a success, featuring in every game since his move from the Magpies, scoring six goals and earning eight assists in 20 appearances.

But now an opportunity has presented itself this summer for a possible reunion with one of Barton’s former players, though it could be dependent on what division the club finds itself in.

Camps has been released along with Harrison Biggins who also worked with Barton along with goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara and Anthony Pilkington.

The 26-year-old made 31 appearances for Fleetwood this season, including eight consecutive starts of Fleetwood’s remaining games. He scored three goals and earnt six assists playing in various roles as a defensive midfielder, central, attacking and even as a left-sided winger.

There is competition however from National League leaders Stockport Count, with a report from the print version from The Sun linking Camps with a move to Edgeley Park.

Barton has looked to his former club before for signings with midfield trio Glenn Whelan, Paul Coutts, and Sam Finley all joining last summer, along with forward Harvey Saunders.

Whelan’s future is still yet to be decided with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, whilst Coutts’ deal was extended by a further year following an activation clause in his existing deal.

Midfield is an area where Barton has a number of options to choose from including Josh Grant whose deal goes beyond this summer.

Meanwhile, whilst Camps departs Fleetwood, former Gas striker Ellis Harrison has signed a new one-year deal with the Lancashire club following an undisclosed fee move from Portsmouth in January.

The 28-year-old was also linked with a move to the Memorial Stadium but Rovers opted to sign Ryan Loft from Scunthorpe United whilst Harrison remained in the third tier.

Harrison netted six goals in 18 appearances for Fleetwood as they survived relegation on goal difference under caretaker manager Stephen Crainey, who stepped in following the sacking of Simon Grayson.
