Bristol Rovers make former Brentford and Watford defender their fifth summer signing

The Gas make their fifth summer signing just an hour before their match with Burton Albion

Bristol Rovers have made their fifth signing of the summer after Lewis Gordon did enough to impress the club whilst on a trial period.

Gordon signs a two-year deal with the club and goes straight into the match day squad for their League One clash against Burton Albion.

The 21-year-old had an offer from a Premier League team to play in their Under-21’s team but has opted to make the dive into senior elvel football.

Gordon came through the academy of Watford ad was their Academy Player of the Year in 2018, progressing to the Under-23's team. His exposure to men's football was a short spell in the National Leaue South with St Albans Ciy, but that came back in 2020.

First-team manager Joey Barton said: “Lewis made an immediate impression on the group after coming in on trial. I’m delighted to agree a deal and look forward to working with him. He has lots of potential and I’m sure the Gasheads will give him a warm welcome.”

Rovers were in the market for a left-back after Josh Grant’s injury problems continued, whilst they made the decision to make Trevor Clarke available for transfer.

For the last two seasons he has been with Brentford and made a start for the Bees in the FA Cup back in January 2021, whilst he was also an unused substitute for four Championship matches.

He played regularly for their 'B' team however, appearing 32 times and scoring one goal which earned a contract extension. Gordon had been in the first-team picture for Brentford last season but remained with the development for another year, making 70 appearances in total but was released.

Meanwhile central defender Jamie Egan, who spent last season on loan in the National League North with Hereford has joined Lee Mansell’s Gloucester City on a one-month loan.
