Molenbeek are owned by Palace co-owner John Textor, which made the move a smooth process.. O’Brien became the second player to depart Selhurst Park for Molenbeek after striker Luke Plange was sent there also.

O'Brien was on loan at Swindon Town last seson, playing regularly for the Robins as he helped them reach the League Two play-offs, however they were unsuccessful after losing to Port Vale. This season, he has been playing for Palace's Under-21's team and played in wins over Brighton's and Man United's academy teams.

O'Brien said to Palace’s official club website after making the move: “Playing in Belgium will be a new challenge, but I’m really up for it. “It might be tricky at first, but I will work hard to establish myself in the Molenbeek squad and press on from here.”

League One outfit Barnsley had been rivalling Rovers for the centre-backs signature but both teams have recruited in that area this summer.
