Antony Evans provides update on Bristol Rovers contract situation as Gas fans hope for new deal

The midfielder is one player that Gasheads would like to see remain at the club but his contract is up at the end of the season

Influential midfielder Antony Evans says he has so far not discussed penning a new deal with Bristol Rovers with his focus instead on the upcoming matches.

Evans has statistically been the Gas’ best player this season with 13 goal contributions and has scored in two consecutive league matches.

The 23-year-old is also enjoying his longest run of games having been in and out of sides at the likes of Everton and German outfit SC Paderborn.

But his contract is due to expire at the end of the season along with a number of important first-team players.

With still more than half the season to play though, his head is looking more towards a strong finish to the campaign rather than contract talks.

“We’ve got a lot of games to play. I haven’t really thought about the contract situation at all at this moment," he said.

"I’m just focusing on getting Bristol into the play-offs and hopefully the automatics. Anything can happen. We’ll see what happens come the end of the season."

Just months after joining, Evans has quickly emerged as a player the fans have quickly warmed to for his style of play and influence on the team.

Social media is awash when Evans does anything positive of note with fans clamouring for the club to extend his stay at the club given how much they enjoy his performances.

“You don’t want to be at a club where you’re not liked,” Evans said.

“It’s been nice for me to get such a great reception from the fans and putting in performances that they’re enjoying and being nice on social media. It’s a really nice touch.”

Before signing for Rovers, Evans was at times playing wing-back for Paderborn before a loan to Crewe Alexandra, of whom he saw last season out with.

Being a free agent, it took a bit of time for him to find a club but he’s now settled at the Memorial Stadium and has become a key player.

“It’s the biggest run of games I’ve had, they’ve given me the chance to play week in and week out, at the moment I’m returning the numbers I want to keep them up.

“When I started speaking to the manager before I came to Bristol, he said I’d be enjoying it. We’d try to be playing good football and I’d get more minutes and I’m getting that now. I’m really enjoying it.”
