The 2023/24 League One season begins next week in what could be viewed as one of the most open divisions after last season’s promotion and relegation.
Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town, two of the biggest hitters in the third tier have gone up, and they’ve been replaced by Blackpool, Wigan Athletic and Reading. No disrespect to the three teams relegated from the Championship but they aren’t nearly as big as the Owls or the Tractor Boys and Wigan are already at a disadvantage because of an eight-point deduction owing to their failings of their previous ownership.
Bristol Rovers’ campaign starts away at Fratton Park against one of the favourites for promotion, Portsmouth. Pompey over the last 20 years have gone from FA Cup winners and playing against AC Milan to becoming a mid-table League One side, but a strong transfer window has got fans of the Hampshire club believing that this could be their year.
League One is a division that has some massive fan bases, and in some cases there are teams such as Derby County, who boast better support than teams in the division above them. Charlton Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley are all former Premier League teams who have big budgets to go alongside their big fan bases, who hold lofty expectations.
