12 incredible pictures from Bristol Rovers’ 2007 League Two play-off triumph over Shrewsbury Town at Wembley

May 15, 2007, is a memorable day in London that lives long in the memories of Bristol Rovers fans,

Bristol Rovers earlier this month celebrated promotion back to League One at the first time of asking after a dramatic conclusion to the 2021/22 campaign.

Joey Barton’s side shot up from 17th on New Year’s Day to third, having only occupied an automatic promotion position for the last ten minutes of the season.

Barton’s band of heroes will live long in the memory but there’s also other team’s that have done the business. It’s exactly 15 years to the day that the Gas had the first of three promotions to English football’s third tier.

Rovers were deprived of the chance of playing at the home of English football in the final of the EFL Trophy and instead suffered a 3-2 defeat to Doncaster Rovers at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff just a month earlier.

In what was their first taste of Wembley Stadium after its redevelopment, Rovers won 3-1 against Shrewsbury Town.

Stuart Drummond’s second minute opener for the Shrews was the worst possible start but a smart finish from Richard Walker to equalise before a delightful lob for his second put Rovers ahead.

In stoppage time in front of a sea of blue and white shirts, Sammy Igoe rolled the ball into an empty net as Rovers broke on the counter-attack.

It was a day that saw more than half of the crowd of 61,589 celebrate what would be four seasons in League One.

To celebrate what was one of the most enjoyable days in the history of the club, we’ve picked out some of the best pictures from it, including some of the fans who were there. Are you in the pictures? Let us know in the comments!
