Vincent Kompany revealed a moment of humour between himself and a Bristol City fan, following Jay Rodriguez’s match-winning goal against the Robins at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

Manuel Benson’s goal sent the Clarets into the break with a narrow lead, before Tommy Conway struck back 10 minutes into the secind half. However, City’s celebrations were shot lived, and minutes later Rodriguez pounced on an Alex Scott error and slotted past Max O’Leary.

In his post match press conference, Clarets manager Kompany couldn’t help but share what happened in the lead up to the winning goal.

He explained: “I’ve just got to share this story because there was a fan behind me and when Jay shanked it wide about two minutes before his goal, the fan couldn’t get up quick enough to shout ‘you’re going to go with that into the Premier League next season?’

“Literally 120 seconds later he scores, from either the same distance or even further out, so I turned around and just has a bit of a smile at him - and he smiled back to be fair.”

The goal was the 32-year-old’s 10th in the league this campaign, in 27 appearances, and following Burnley’s confirmed promotion to the topflight next season, the question of whether the ageing forward will stick around beyond this season was posed.

Kompany answered: “Yes he is part of our plans, he’s recently signed a contract extension as well at the start of the season. he knows the league and he's always been a good player in the Premier League as well, for him it’s just about keeping fit and having him around the younger players as well to share that message of what it demands to be in that league.”
