Bristol City have extended the contract of midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson by triggering a one-year extension.

The new deal will keep him at the club until 2023, which should take him up to six-years of service for the Robins.

Bakinson has racked up 50 appearances for City and clinched victory in his half-century as he scored the only goal in the 1-0 win over Stoke City.

He has so far started eight times in the Championship this season, having displaced Han-Noah Massengo, as well as deputising for Matty James.

Commenting on the new deal, manager Nigel Pearson said to Robins TV: “Tyreeq will develop as far as he wants to because he has got the tools and I am pleased that he is starting to perform in a way we need him to as a team – that’s the key.

“He is a player who gives us a different skillset to some of the other players we have got and is a talented player for sure but he is not the finished article.

“Tyreeq has an eye for a goal too, which is important, and I’m pleased that we have extended his contract and he is happy to be here.”

The 23-year-old had a breakthrough season with City last year, making 39 appearances across all competitions. Before being given a run in the side, he was loaned out to both Newport County and Plymouth Argyle in League Two.

There are still four senior players who are out of contract at the end of the season with Callum O’Dowda, Chris Martin, Andy King and Danny Simpson’s contracts all running out next summer.

City do have the option though to extend both O’Dowda and Martin’s contract, something of which could be considered given Martin’s run in the side and O’Dowda’s recent run of form at wing-back.

Earlier this month, Richard Gould did reveal that discussions are ongoing to extend the contracts of players whose deals are running out.
