The out-of-contract right-backs Bristol City could sign - including West Ham man
Right-back is an area of the pitch that Bristol City have looked to strengthen in
Bristol City have a decision to make on whether to continue their search for a right-back after the addition of Kal Naismith.
Naismith joined on a three-year deal from losing play-off finalists Luton Town in what is a good bit of early business for the Robins, following Oxford United’s Mark Sykes who was the first player through the door.
The 30-year-old can play anywhere across the back-line as either a left-back, right-back or even as a centre-back and captained Nathan Jones’ men on a number of occasions as they became the surprise package of the 2021/22 season.
Given the number of options at centre-back after Timm Klose’s new deal, it’ll be interesting to see where the Scotland international ends up playing as Jay Dasilva has cemented his side down the left flank.
Naismith hasn’t come here to just sit on the bench and is that ‘experienced’ Championship player that Nigel Pearson was looking for so expect him to stake a claim for a starting spot.
But right-back or specifically wing-back is an area that was an issue last season and a further signing in that position could really fix the issues of what was a leaky defence last season.
Given how the first two signings have been free transfers, we’ve scoured the list of free agents or those that will be out of contract come the end of the month to see whether they’d be a bit.
Below are the players we’ve found that could be a good match for City with some more ambitious than others.

1. Tommy Smith
Allowed to leave Stoke City after three years of service. Versatile player and got seven goal contributions for the Potters this campaign, including six assists. Experienced Championship player that could be a good option to consider. Photo: Nathan Stirk/Getty Images

2. Martin Kelly
Left Crystal Palace after eight years in a spell that got the Eagles a 10th-placed finish and an FA Cup final. Struggled to get into their first-team over the last few seasons and has made just one league appearance over the last two. Only played outside the top flight for one time in his career, a short stint at Huddersfield. Photo: Kirsty Wigglesworth/Pool/Getty Images

3. Cyrus Christie
Scored a brace against Bristol City for Swansea City in a disappointing collapse for the Robins back in February. The Republic of Ireland international is considering an option from abroad however after being released by Fulham. The 29-year-old got seven goal contributions for the Welsh side last year.

4. Phil Bardsley
Former ManchesterUnited defender Phil Bardsley was released after Burnley’s relegation. At 36-years-old time may be getting on for him after making no appearanes in the Premier League last season. Not played in the Championship since 2008 however.
