‘Unlucky’ - Nigel Pearson delivers proud Bristol City verdict amid Ipswich Town defeat

Nigel Pearson says Bristol City were unlucky in their 1-0 defeat to promotion chasing Ipswich Town on Wednesday evening.

The Tractor Boys took the lead in the 16th minute through Nathan Broadhead, as the EFL Championship high flyers dominated the first period.

City responded well after the break, and after several spells of pressure on the Town goal, Harry Cornick’s effort rolled agonisingly across the goalline after bouncing off the post.

Rob Dickie and Tommy Conway both went close for the Robins, and Pearson was pleased with his sides display.

“We were a little bit unlucky tonight, we played well,” he said. “I can’t ask a lot more of the players in terms of how they approached the game.

“I think it was a very tight game of football, I don’t think that there was too much in the game. We’re a bit disapointed with the goal that we conceded based on the fact that it came out of nothing really, but when you play against sides that are on a really good run, those key moments are important.”

Broadhead was allowed too much space in the edge of the area and got his strike away under little pressure. Though the shot was struck well, goalkeeper Max O’Leary will maybe feel aggrieved that he didnt get a hand on it.

For a period after the goal, it felt like a matter of when and not if the visitors would net a second. However, City were brave in their press and made Kieran McKenna’s side uncomfortable in possession late in the game.

“We’ve created pressure on a side who are doing exceptionally well in the league, they’ve carried their momentum forward, you can see that they’re a very compact group of people,” Pearson added.

“But I think they’ll be quite happy to go away with the three points. They’ll know they’ve been in a game, if they say anything other than that then they’re pulling the wool over people’s eyes because we stretched them right to the limit and we put them under pressure like a lot of sides haven’t done this season.”
