‘Mr Consistency’ - The expert opinion on Bristol City’s newest recruit Kane Wilson

Ashley Loveridge, a journalist for the Stroud Times has sung the praises of Bristol City’s third summer signing

Bristol City are giving their supporters something to cheer for as their demands for a new right-wing back have been answered in the signing of Kane Wilson.

The 22-year-old underwent a medical on Friday and is the third signing of the summer on the first day of the transfer window after the early additions of Mark Sykes from Oxford United and Luton Town’s Kal Naismith.

It was an area of the pitch that needed strengthening in with both Alex Scott and top scorer Andreas Weimann tried their last season but now there is a player that can nail down that position as his own.

To get the low down on what to expect from the latest man to be revealed on obligatory reveal on the roof of Ashton Gate, we spoke to Ashley Loveridge who has covered Forest Green Rovers for some time for the Stroud Times.

Firstly, what are Bristol City going to get from Kane Wilson? What kind of player is he, is he consistent?

An electric attacking wing-back who is a throwback to the old days - at times it looked as if he had the ball on a piece of string as he cut a swathe through defences, like a knife slicing melted butter.

He was largely Mr Consistency during Rovers’ League Two title triumph but his form dipped somewhat in the latter stages of the season as his head was more than likely turned as a raft of scouts from the Championship regularly rocked up at the New Lawn to run the rule on the former West Brom youngster.

Bristol City mainly played with a back five last season without a winger. Is that a system do you think that Wilson can work in?

Yes, Wilson is certainly adaptable and flourished under the guidance of boss Rob Edwards, but is far more comfortable in an advanced role, playing just in front of a back three.

Both Wilson and Ebou Adams have now departed for the Championship, although it is two different positions, who is best equipped in dealing with the step up and is Wilson capable of it?

Wilson boasts one Premier League game under his belt when playing for West Brom. He’s certainly unproven at City’s level, but I expect the League Two player of the season to make a good fist of life in the Championship.

City had some issues keeping goals out last season and whilst Wilson’s attacking stats look good, is he also a capable defender?

Wilson’s attacking prowess is well documented, but his defensive capabilities are sound and his jet-heeled speed was impressive when he needed to dig his side out of a hole.

Strengths and weaknesses?

Mesmeric dribbling ability and pace to burn. Needs to sharpen up on his aerial defensive duties.
