Bristol City make the Boxing Day trip to Kenilworth Road this weekend to face Luton Town.

It is one of few EFL games that have survived as COVID-19 wreaks havoc on the fixture list for a second consecutive week.

Fortunately from the City camp, it seems unlikely that this game will be called off with no positive cases reported.

They will want to pick themselves up though from defeat to Huddersfield Town at Ashton Gate last week. They took the lead through Andi Weimann but goals from Duane Holmes, Daniel Sinani and Danny Ward gave the Terriers the win.

For the Hatters, they were without a game given their match away at Reading was postponed due to an outbreak in their opponents squad.

What’s the latest team news for Bristol City?

Nathan Baker remains sidelined for an indefinite period after sustaining a head injury against Sheffield United.

Andy King could make a return to the side after making good progress from a hamstring injury which forced him to get surgery.

Callum O’Dowda is back in contention after missing the defeat to Huddersfield due to a groin injury. He would likely slot back into left-back where Ayman Benarous deputised.

Antoine Semenyo should be expected to line up top with Chris Martin once more after getting two assists last week for Andi Weimann.

This game may be something of interest to central midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson who returns to the team in which he started his professional career. Bakinson made one senior appearance for the Hatters after joining them at under-10s level but was signed by City for an undisclosed fee.

There aren’t as many players in the treatment room for Sunday’s opponents, the only player as of note is Luke Berry, who has four goals and two assists, he misses out due to a knee injury. He’s been out since October.

The danger for Luton Town will be striker Elijah Adebayo who has netted 10 goals this season. Harry Cornick is not far behind him with seven goals so there are some potent attackers in this squad.

Right-back James Bree is their top assists maker this season, supplying four goals so that will be an indication as to how Luton play.

Head-to-head

Nathan Jones’ men are exceeding expectations again as one of the unfancied teams in division they are currently 14th in the league table. They are four places above City but just two points separate the two sides, highlighting the competitiveness of the division.

Last season Luton got the better of Bristol on both occasions, winning in both December and in April.

This season, the two met at Ashton Gate and played to a 1-1 draw with Danny Hylton scoring a stoppage time equaliser for the visitors to cancel out Nathan Baker’s opener.

Overall City don’t possess the best record against Luton in recent history, winning just once in the last 21 years.

The two teams are fairly evenly matched though as both have won on 22 occasions whilst there have been 18 draws.
