Former Bristol City star Liam Rosenior has been slapped with a one-match touchline ban and a £2,000 fine for improper conduct during Hull City's first match of the Championship season.

The former Robins full-back is now manager at Hull City, who began their second division campaign with a dramatic 2-1 loss to Norwich City at Carrow Road. The Canaries snatched the three points thanks to a 96th-minute Adam Idah goal, which Rosenior felt was unjust for his side.

The 39-year-old was shown a red card in stoppage time after arguing with officials and that punishment was compounded by the FA ruling this week.

In a statement, the FA said: "Liam Rosenior has been suspended from the touchline for one game and fined £2,000 following Hull City’s EFL Championship fixture against Norwich City on Saturday, 5 August.

"The manager was charged with a breach of FA Rule E3, and he subsequently accepted that his behaviour towards a match official in the 97th minute was improper and confrontational."

Rosenior, who made 25 appearances for Bristol City having come through the club's youth academy, had admitted to throwing his jacket on the floor but maintained that he had not used offensive language in a rage.

The former footballer was banned from giving a post-match interview, as per new FA rulings, but has since spoken out about the incident. He said: "I like Keith [Stroug], he's a good referee. When you watch the incident back, the ball goes into a safe zone and instead of looking in the box where he should be looking, he's looking at his watch because time is done.

"While he's looking at his watch, my big centre-half has just been thrown on the floor. Cross comes in, Macca has got up from being thrown on the floor, cross hits him, hits their lad who is in an offside position and he scores from the last kick of the game. Now we're talking about me being sent off as a reaction to all of those circumstances?

"Now, that doesn't excuse our performance. We've had a great point taken away from us because of officiating and now I lose out because of my reaction to that.

"I went in after the game, Keith invited me in and we had a really good conversation afterwards. Hopefully, that's taken into account, it's a reaction to something that shouldn't have happened in the first place.

"I can categorically say there was no offensive language towards the fourth official, no name calling. I did throw my jacket on the floor in rage, which is a reaction to them scoring a last-second goal away from home, as well as the decision. I still don't know why I've been sent off."

Rosenior will face his old side in Bristol City later this month when Nigel Perason's side travel to the MKM Stadium on August 25. The return fixture is in the calendar for December 23 at Ashton Gate.
