Derrick Williams, who played for Bristol City from 2013 to 2016, has joined Wayne Rooney’s DC United. The defender has linked up with the MLS club from LA Galaxy.

The Republic of Ireland international made the move over to America in March 2021 from Blackburn Rovers. He is now embarking on a new chapter at Audi Field and will now be teammates with fellow former Football League players like Ravel Morrison and Brad Smith.

DC United’s President of Soccer Operations Dave Kasper has said: “We’re focused on strengthening our backline this offseason and the acquisition of Derrick, a left-footed center back, is the first step of that process.

“He’s a well-seasoned professional with experience at the highest-levels of our sport and understands Major League Soccer. He’s an exciting addition for us and we look forward to welcoming him into the fold and into Wayne Rooney’s system.”

Bristol City signed Williams from Aston Villa and he helped the Robins gain promotion from League One in his second season at Ashton Gate. He went on to play 131 games in all competitions before heading out the exit door when Blackburn came calling.

He then spent five years at Ewood Park and made 152 appearances for the Lancashire outfit before making the move across the pond. DC United finished 14th in the Eastern Conference last term. Rooney left Derby over the summer to move back to Washington and will be looking to guide them to glory next year.
