Nigel Pearson has praised Bristol City’s ‘accomplished’ midfielder, Matty James, after several key performances in the middle of the park.

During City’s ongoing unbeaten run of nine matches, the likes of Alex Scott, Kal Naismith and Zak Vyner have been among the individuals who’ve received many plaudits for their contributions - and rightly so.

But, while fancy footwork, switched passes and last-ditch blocks often catch the eye, James’ role in the midfield can often fly under the radar.

James goes about his duties in midfield steadily, and while his dogged work may go unnoticed at times, Pearson has revealed how much James’ coaches and peers appreciate his contributions.

“It’s eye-catching to us and it’s eye-catching to his teammates and that is the most important thing,” he said. “There are players in sides, in any group of players or a squad, who are very visible in the public domain, but for me, the biggest compliment I could give Matty James is probably that his teammates recognise his contribution. I don’t think there’s a greater compliment a manager could give to a player than that.”

Whether it’s getting touch tight to opposition players, keeping the play ticking or communicating with his teammates, the ex-Manchester United man’s role in midfield is priceless.

James has taken up the captain's armband in recent months, following Dan Bentley’s departure and Andi Weimann’s injury problems.

The 31-year-old provides a steady head in the middle and is a vital cog which allows the likes of Scott, Cam Pring and George Tanner to venture forward in the Robins’ new 4-3-3 formation.

Pearson continued: “Outside of that, he’s a good technician, he understands the game and he’s got the ability to influence his teammates. It’s something that internally we value and he knows his worth to the squad, whether he plays or he doesn’t. He’s a very accomplished performer and he’s got a Premier League medal.”

James was one of Pearson’s first-ever signings at the West Country side, and the pair also worked together at Leicester City.

With Naismith set to be unavailable for selection for the next few weeks, James’ experience, composure and leadership will be essential traits if City are to carry on their impressive run of form.
