Ex- Bristol City defender Danny Simpson is training with non-league side Macclesfield. The 36-year-old has been a free agent since parting company with the Robins last March and has since been weighing up his options.

As pictured on the Silkmen’s Twitter page, the experienced right-back has linked up with the current Northern Premier League league leaders (see below).

Simpson started out as a youngster at Manchester United before loan spells at Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, Ipswich Town and Newcastle United before the latter came calling on a permanent basis in 2010. He spent three years in the North East and helped the Toon Army gain promotion to the top flight.

QPR snapped him up in 2013 and he went on to help the R’s go up from the Championship via the play-offs under Harry Redknapp. The Mancunian then joined Leicester City and made 133 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions, playing a part in them winning the Premier League title against the odds during his time at the King Power Stadium.

Simpson signed for Bristol City after a spell at Huddersfield Town in 2020 and played eight times altogether at Ashton Gate. However, he had his deal mutually terminated last year.

He is now training with Macclesfield who are managed by Neil Danns these days. They have lots of ex-Football League players like Mark Duffy, James Berry, Luke Murphy, Tom Thorpe and ex-Robins striker Nicky Maynard.
