Speaking on ITV’s new English Football League show, pundit Dean Ashton has said Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson has reason to be aggrieved after Hull City were awarded a controversial penalty yesterday.

Striker Benjamin Tetteh fell in the box on 72 minutes and was judged to have been tripped up.

Ozan Tufan then tucked away the spot kick past Dan Bentley and the Tigers went on to win the match 2-1.

Pearson wasn’t best pleased with the penalty decision and said:

“We’ve been mugged a bit today. The penalty that they had was... If you look at it back it was a bit embarrassing for the officials. So we’ll see what they come up with about that.”

Former West Ham United and Norwich City striker Ashton had this to say on the incident last night:

“Tetteh does get kicked to start with, I think there is some contact but there is allowed to be contact without it being a penalty. Clearly he could’ve taken a step and then a shot so I think he’s justified in what he has said, (Nigel) Pearson.

“That was a key moment in the game to equalise for Hull. They’ve made big signings.”

Blow for Bristol City

Bristol City were disappointed to leave the MKM Stadium with nothing after showing what they are capable of, especially in the first-half.

The Robins were comfortable in the first 45 minutes and went into the interval a goal up thanks to Andreas Weimann’s close-range strike.

Their new signings Mark Sykes and Kal Naismith put in solid performances, but like Ashton said, the penalty incident on Tetteh changed the game.

The match looked like it was heading for a 1-1 draw before Jean Michael Seri’s strike in added-on time took a huge deflection that looped into the net past Bentley.
