Bristol City’s Boxing day game against Luton Town has been confirmed as being off, meaning that the Robins will not play again until at home against QPR on 30th December.

City explained that due to positive COVID-19 cases at Luton Town, the Hatters had requested postponing the game.

The EFL agreed to rearrange the fixture and a new date and time will be confirmed in due course.

City supporters were unhappy at the timing of the announcement, coming just after noon on Christmas Day, but the decision follows on from several EFL games being similarly postponed at late notice, with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to influence football.

Indeed, at the time of writing only two Championship fixtures are set to played on Boxing Day: Huddersfield vs Blackpool, and Middlesbrough vs Nottingham Forest.

English football has been hit hard by COVID-19 cases, with Steven Gerrard and Patrick Vieira both missing their respective Boxing Day games due to testing positive for the virus.

The Robins will now have 12 days in total to prepare for the visit of Mark Warburton’s side, having last played Huddersfield Town on 18 December, a 2-3 loss.

Nigel Pearson’s side are looking to return to winning ways after a draw (against Hull City) and a defeat since beating Derby County 1-0 on 4 December.

What Bristol City say

Bristol City’s Boxing Day match-up with Luton Town has been postponed at the Hatters’ request.

Nigel Pearson’s side were prepared to travel to Kenilworth Road this afternoon but due a number of positive cases in the Luton camp the fixture will be now be rearranged.

Tickets for the Boxing Day fixture will remain valid for the new date, which will confirmed in due course.

However, if supporters are unable to attend they can contact Supporter Services to begin the process of a refund.

All supporters that have purchased Coach Travel will be contacted regarding a refund.

What Luton Town say

We are sorry to inform supporters that the Hatters’ Boxing Day fixture against Bristol City has been postponed.

The Sky Bet Championship match had been due to take place tomorrow, Sunday 26th December, with a 3pm kick-off at Kenilworth Road.

The postponement is due to a number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Town playing squad, meaning the fixture cannot be fulfilled.

Any rearranged date will be confirmed in due course, with information on arrangements for tickets purchased shared once the Ticket Office reopens.

We would like to wish all Hatters a Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year!
