Bristol City player ratings v Rotherham United: 'Livewire' shines as three 8/10s scored in routine win

Robins 2-0 Rotherham

Bristol City continued their positive end to the season with a 2-0 win over relegated Rotherham United in the Championship.

Tommy Conway opened the scoring from the penalty spot after the Scot was brought down by Millers goalkeeper Dillon Phillips in the first period.

A brilliant free-kick from Scott Twine doubled the Robins’ advantage against the League One bound visitors.

The result means the Robins are now unbeaten in seven matches ahead of their final match of the season at Stoke City next weekend.

The Robins made a fast start and looked to use Conway’s pace behind the visiting defence.

The striker turned his man on the halfway line and progressed towards goal, but saw his effort stopped by Phillips.

Liam Manning’s side continued to dominate and almost crafted an opener when Anis Mehmeti’s cross was flicked into the path of Conway, but the Rotherham keeper sharply smothered the ball.

However, Rotherham almost took a surprise lead when the ball bypassed Rob Dickie on the halfway line.

Tom Eaves ran through on goal but saw his effort pushed behind by Max O’Leary. From the resulting corner, Hakeem Odoffin’s header was well saved.

Moments later, Mehmeti broke free and drew out Phillips, but the Albanian couldn’t sort his feet out and was eventually dispossessed by the goalkeeper.

On the 31-minute mark, the Robins won a penalty after Conway was brought down by Phillips in the area.

The Scot stepped up and slotted into the bottom right corner of the Rotherham goalkeeper’s net.

Conway saw a left-footed effort blocked by Phillips’ chest soon after before Twine’s free-kick effort flashed narrowly over the crossbar.

City kept up their dominance after the break and almost doubled their lead through Matty James.

Pring wriggled away from a couple of challenges on the left and progressed to the goalline, his pulled back cross was deflected into the path of James whose effort was blocked away.

Twine then won a free-kick just outside the box, the Burnley loanee stepped up and fired over the wall and into the back of the net for 2-0.

Despite Rotherham’s attempts to impose themselves on the match, City dealt with the Millers comfortably throughout the second period and were well worth the victory.
