Liam Manning praised Bristol City’s ‘purpose and desire’ after their 5-0 thrashing over Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night and picked out Tommy Conway as a key performer.

Conway and Nahki Wells netted twice, while Anis Mehmeti was also on the scoresheet at Ashton Gate.

The win was City’s third in four matches, as they recorded four clean sheets in a row in the process.

“I think the desire to run, to do things properly, discipline, to not turn away from what gets you success and togetherness (were key),” Manning said on the Robins’ performance.

“There was just real purpose to everything we did, pressing, attacking, there was good variety. We spun down the outside where we thought we could hurt them and we played through them as well.”

“That’s what I want the team to look like.”

A poor error from Dominic Hyam allowed Conway through, who made no mistake from the edge of the area.

The Scot notched a second from the penalty spot before the break after Mark Sykes was brought down by Hyam.

The manager continued: “It reminded me a little bit of the goal against West Ham in terms of chasing in behind. I always say to him, our front players have to be our best defenders.

“I’d say two or three of Tommy’s goals this season have come from simply being a really good defender.”

Mehmeti made an instant impact off the bench as he fired in a third goal before a Wells penalty and close-range finish rounded off a top performance.

City host Huddersfield Town on Saturday, as Manning’s side try and end their season on a positive note going into the summer.
