Bristol City are in the mix for promotion to the Premier League this season

Bristol City supporters are dreaming of promotion to the Premier League this season. The Robins reached the play-off final back in 2008 but were beaten by Hull City at Wembley. They haven’t been that close to the top flight since then but things could change this year.

Liam Manning’s side have been in decent form over recent times and have risen into the top six. They beat West Brom 2-1 at home last time out. Defender Haydon Roberts scored a last-gasp winner against the Baggies.

How many points do Bristol City need to secure play-off place?

According to data experts Opta, Bristol City now have a 75% chance of getting into the play-offs. They are predicted to pick up 70 points by the end of the campaign. The Robins are being tipped to be in the top six along with Sheffield United, Sunderland and Coventry City, with Middlesbrough, West Brom, Millwall and Watford missing out.

If Opta’s prediction is true, Manning’s men only need seven points from their remaining five fixtures to secure their position. They are currently on 63 points after their latest three points. Middlesbrough are three points below them in 7th.

Next up for Bristol City is QPR (A), Sunderland (H), Luton Town (A), Leeds United (A) and Preston North End (H). They would need two wins and a draw from these games to match the points tally they are predicted they need. QPR, Sunderland and Preston don’t have much to play for now but Luton need points to stay up and Leeds are in the race for the top two.

Bristol City boss Liam Manning reaction to West Brom win

Bristol City are carrying momentum now and will be full of confidence. Speaking after their victory over West Brom, Manning said: “From start to finish, the atmosphere was excellent. The lads stood up and delivered for a large chunk of the game. Up to their goal, I thought we were excellent.

"Obviously, we had a 20-minute period after their goal where naturally, you go from being in quite good control and in a really good spot to putting them back in the game. Naturally, they then get the high so we had a bit of a period after that but I keep saying to you guys all the time about the culture that we've got and that kind of epitomises it, the lads fighting until the end.

"You've got lads flat out on their feet, giving it absolutely everything and they deserve that tonight. We've been on the other end of a few of those this season so I think the lads deserve that tonight and I'm delighted for them."

Manning was pleased to see Roberts score the winner: “It's a memory that will live with him forever and I think that's very much what football can be about. I think it can be about that. I'm sure that when he looks back on his career, when he finishes down the line, he'll always remember tonight.”
