Bristol City player ratings vs Hull City: 8/10 'show of control' but 5/10's day to forget in 1-1 stalemate

Bristol City player ratings and scores from the 1-1 draw against Hull City in the Championship at Ashton Gate.

Bristol City's play off hopes took a dent after a 1-1 draw at home against ten-man Hull City.

Anis Mehmeti's 12th goal of the season couldn't provide a full comeback despite playing against the Championship strugglers who battled their way to a point despite being a man down for the majority of the game.

After a quiet start to the game there were then two minutes of madness and it started when the away side took the lead thanks to Joao Pedro's sixth goal of the season.

But then he went from hero to zero when 96 seconds later he jumped into a two-footed challenge on George Tanner to earn himself a straight red card which raised the mood at Ashton Gate.

Off the back of a great win at home against middlesborough followed by an even better win at Millwall, Everyone would have expected City to take this opportunity with both hands and look to move into the playoffs.

In the second half, Sinclair Armstrong won the penalty which was converted by Mehmeti and it came off the back of almost 75 minutes of total Robins domination. There were chances for Twine, Vyner and Armstrong but they couldn't be put away and Ruben Selles’ Tigers left Ashton Gate definitely the happier of the two sides.

Max O’Leary - 7

A quiet afternoon for City’s number one today as apart from the goal he didn't have a lot to do. With the goal, he was beaten by a good finish by Joao Pedro, and when he had a split-second to guess which way the ball was going he dived right and the Hull man put it left. Not much he could've done differently there. Was commanding from set pieces consistently claiming them and putting City on the counter.

Cam Pring - 6.5

Along with Tanner was effectively playing wing back for the period of the game when they were playing ten men, linked up well with Mehmeti and was a part of a good high press in the first half. In the second it was more quiet with a couple of link ups with Mehmeti going astray. Then he got a yellow card for a tough challenge after losing the ball, And then manning brought him off for Roberts on the hour-mark.

Zak Vyner - 7

Defended very well across the game while his passing was crisp and was always looking to go forward. Had a driven shot in the second half when the score was 0-1 but it was just wide. Probably spent more time in the opposition's final third instead of his own but that was the manner of the game today.

Rob Dickie - 5.5

Not the former QPR centre-half’s day today with a mistake for the first goal getting spun by Joao Pedro. Then later on when it was a rare bit of defending to do the ball when the ball had spent pretty much the entire game in the Hull half he passed it straight to the Hull forward. A day to forget.

George Tanner - 6.5

Along with his full back partner, Pring, he was almost playing as a wink back. As usual when city are playing a possession based style. Was on the receiving end of a big tackle by Joao Pedro which resulted in the Hull forward getting sent off. And he was replaced by Sam Bell just after the hour mark.

Jason Knight - 7.5

After the sending off, he had complete control of the midfield with multiple interceptions on constantly feeding the ball left to right to Sykes and Mehmeti. Had a big chance at the beginning of the second half but couldn't convert. Was a proving game for the captain today as they had to face a lot of adversity and the skipper was constantly motivating his players.

Max Bird - 8

A show of composure in midfield today from City’s number six. Looked like he saw the game in slow motion at time and he moved the ball forwards, sideways and backwards with total ease. There were a few opportunities when he had the ball just outside the Hull box and Ashton Gate were calling for a shot but instead he chose to cross instead. Bird really is turning into one of the best midfielders in the EFL since his arrival from Derby.

Mark Sykes 6.5

The Irish international put in numerous good balls but nobody could get on the end of them. Tirelessly worked up and down the right hand side but unfortunately for him the end product wasn't there today. Was replaced by Hirakawa on the 70th minute.

Anis Mehmeti - 7

After not having his usual first half he started the second with a bang by placing home a penalty for his 12th goal of the season. Looked to try and beat his full back marker every time he got the ball and his link-up play with a mixture of Pring and Roberts was easily City’s best attacking outlet at times today. Mehmeti showed why he is turning into a real crowd favourite following a slow start to life in Bristol following his move from Wycombe two years ago.

Scott Twine - 6.5

By far City’s most willing player with the ball. Got the ball numerous times outside the box and heard 20 thousand plus at Ashton gate wanting him to shoot and when he did he forced Hull keeper Ivor Pandur into numerous good saves. A quieter second half for twine and when he got an opportunity for his trademark free kick it wasn't to be. A frustrating afternoon for the former Hull City loanee and he just wasn’t able to make his dead-ball skills count in a way Robins fans have been become accustomed to recently.

Sinclair Armstrong - 7

First big involvement came just after half an hour played when his header from a Tanner cross went just over the bar, Then the same thing happened a couple of minutes later after a Mark Sykes cross. Won the penalty just after half time when he was held just before he had a header at goal. Had another couple sights at goal including an overhead kick which he did not connect but it got a good reaction from the crowd. Was replaced by Cornick on the 79th minute.

Substitutes

Haydon Roberts - 7

Came on for Pring just after the hour mark and the ten minutes that he and Mehmeti were on the pitch together looked to be a real spark for the homeside looking for the goal that they needed. Didn't have a lot if any defending to do today and his energy up and down the wing giving the city attacks some width.

Harry Cornick - 6

Came on with about ten minutes to make a similar impact to midweek against Millwall at the Den. But, Despite three stands at Ashton Gate cheering him on, he couldn't make a similar impact again but not for a lack of trying.

Yu Hirakawa - 6

A frustrating one for the Japanese winger today as it seemed like his role was just to try and get crosses in from the right hand side. Majority of the time they were headed away or overhit and because of the manner of Hull’s defending it was very difficult for him to cut inside and try and get a shot off.

George Earthy - 6

Came on with Hirakawa as part of a double substitution but alongside the majority of the city team today he couldn't make a massive impact. He seemed to slot in at right wing back for Tanner and won the ball back and fed it down the line to a teammate a few times but it never amounted to anything.

Sam Bell - 7

Came on for Mehmeti which i think surprised the crowd at Ashton Gate. But he was City’s best substitute, went straight into the vacant left wing position and constantly beat his man and getting the ball into the area. Despite not being a natural winger,as he was a striker growing up, He looked like a seasoned pro on the wing for the Robins today.
